Examination Content

All candidates must obtain a passing score on a nationally recognized professional multiple-choice examination.  Arrangements can be made to take the examination in your local area at a college or military testing center.  Certification review training courses and publications are available to provide direction and focus in preparation for the examination. Examinations are required for each certification.

 

EXAMINATION CONTENT FOR THE CERTIFIED HAZARD CONTROL MANAGER, CHCM:

The CHCM examination concentrates on management concepts and principles as indicated in the following outline:

  • Management principles and techniques
  • Hazard Control Program techniques
  • Interfacing staff functions
  • Hazard control program disciplines and sources of information
  • Legislative and regulation requirements and standards-setting organizations
  • Communications and report writing

 

EXAMINATION CONTENT FOR THE CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE SAFETY PROFESSIONAL, CHSP:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: line and staff responsibilities, management attitudes and motivation efficient management and accident prevention

LAWS, REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS: OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration), NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), FPA (National Fire Protection Association), JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations)/Accreditation Factors

PATIENT SAFETY: evacuation plans and procedures, slips, trips and falls, electrical, radiation, food and sanitation

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: essential services and utilities, external disaster, internal disaster fire/bomb

EMPLOYEE SAFETY: procedures, radiation shielding, chemical and biological exposures, burns, cuts and punctures, electrical, fire prevention, protection and emergency procedures, anesthetics, infection control, lifting and body mechanics, isolation techniques and nursing exposures

FACILITIES: lab safety-flammables, ventilation, waste management-storage and disposal, fire protection-construction and extinguishing, security, maintenance and electrical safety

 

EXAMINATION CONTENT FOR THE CERTIFIED PATIENT SAFETY OFFICER, CPSO:

 

The exam focuses on culture, communication, education, and coordination of effective patient safety programs. The exam also evaluates understanding of key patient safety initiatives including best practices and patient safety goals. Persons earning the designation will be challenged to lead organizational changes that focus on safety culture development, use of system safety principles, and the creation of trust. Senior leaders are encouraged to support personnel desiring to achieve this timely certification. Large organizations can benefit by having several people earn the designation. In the future the program plans to offer certifications at the specialist and executive levels.

  • Regulations and standards

  • Product safety liability and insurance

  • Analytical and system safety techniques

  • Organization, operation and auditing product safety programs

 

EXAMINATION CONTENT FOR THE CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY PROFESSIONAL, CHEP:

The CHEP was developed to meet the need for a practical but professional certification for healthcare emergency executives, managers, coordinators, and associates. The Board received input from practicing healthcare emergency and disaster professionals when developing this designation. The program relies on information, standards, and best practices from reliable sources including organizations such NFPA, ASTM, DHS, EPA, OSHA, FEMA, ASHE, and the Joint Commission.  Healthcare organizations need professionals that understand how emergency management principles support the healthcare environment of care and the community. Candidates for the must complete a thorough application process and pass a comprehensive closed book examination 100 to 120 multiple-choice items. The Board offers certification at the Associate, Master, or Executive Level.

Prep and exam sessions are sometimes offered by outside groups. The schedule for these seminars is under the Exam and Training Schedule section.
